Jamaican athlete Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who has on many occasions been crowned a Global and Olympic champion, is still aiming at the Female Athlete of the Year honour. She is set to face stiff competition.
Yesterday, the sport’s governing organization listed the Jamaican athlete among the five finalists competing to be crowned the World Athletics 2022 Female Athlete of the Year. This season saw the 35-year-old win the world 100m title for the fifth time while making impressive time records.
Last month saw the organization shortlist 10 athletes which included Jamaican Shericka Jackson, the world 200 metres champion. Jackson made it to the list mainly due to her stunning record during the summer at the World Athletic Championships. All the same, she failed to make it to the final shortlist.
The other athletes who made the final cut include; American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone who holds the World and Olympic 400m title, Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas who holds the World and Olympic triple jump title, Nigerian Tobi Amusan holder of World 100m hurdles title and Peruvian Kimberly Garcia who holds the World 20k walk title.
Back in 2013, Fraser-Pryce claimed the award and is now looking forward to win the award once again. Other athletes who have won the award more than once include; Russian Yelena Isinbayeva, American Marion Jones and Sanya Richards-Ross also from the United States. Isinbayeva boasts of winning the award the most number of times which is three.
However, this year will be a tough struggle for Fraser-Pryce since Amusan and McLaughlin-Levrone have recently managed to break world records. According World 100m hurdles title holder Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Fraser-Pryce will most likely win due to her efforts that made her quite unstoppable this year. Hilton believes that her dominance might just give her the edge over her opponents.
The winner is set to be declared on the 5th of December at the World Athletic Awards.
