Mason Greenwood to Play for Jamaica

Reggae Boyz pushing to recruit Man. United star Mason Greenwood. The Jamaican Football Federation is trying to convince Mason Greenwood to play for the Reggae Boyz. The Manchester United wonderkid has been scoring goals for fun and could be useful in helping Jamaica qualify for the upcoming World Cup. Greenwood has parents with Jamaican roots and that means that he is eligible to switch nationalities from England to Jamaica. The youngster was named in England’s provisional team for the recently concluded European Championship. However, he decided to withdraw from the squad because of an injury that has been troubling him since March. Greenwood has only played one senior game for England in September 2020. England manager Gareth Southgate dropped him from the squad after breaking Covid-19 rules together with Manchester City’s Phil Foden. Although he has shown indiscipline while playing for the Three Lions, he is only 19 years old and has a lot to learn.

The Jamaican football authorities have been aggressively bolstering the national team by recruiting dual-nationality players who add quality to their squad. This strategy of recruiting players who are in the fringes of other national teams has certainly paid off because Jamaica now boasts of having many household names. Some of the big-name players include: Michail Antonio, Ravel Morrison, Bobby Reid and Andre Gray. Most of these players play their club football in England. The Caribbean nation’s optimism to get Greenwood is likely because he has been exiled by Gareth Southgate since last year. He has not been seen in an England shirt since Southgate sent him packing. Southgate was definitely harsh on Greenwood because Foden was quickly allowed back into the squad although they did the same mistake. The Jamaican FA has targeted many famous footballers but Greenwood is the most talented of them all.
He is touted to become one of the best strikers in the world and he has already scored three goals in four matches this season.

Jamaica is building an imposing team that they hope will help them in the World Cup Qualifiers later this year. Ivan Toney, Rolando Aarons, Mason Holgate, Demarai Gray, Max Aarons, Kasey Palmer, Amari’i Bell, Jamal Lowe, Curtis Tilt, Ethan Pinnock, Isaac Hayden, Liam Moore, have all been hunted down, with several of them choosing to play for the Reggae Boyz. Greenwood has not responded to news linking him to Jamaica and it therefore remains to be seen what will happen in the future. He has played for England in the Under-21, Under-18 and Under-17 level. This is not a problem because players who are 21 years or younger are allowed to switch their nationality even if they have already played for one country.
