In the sport of archery, the archer uses a bow to propel arrows to hit targets from set distances. Derived from the Latin word ‘arcus’, archery was only used for combat and hunting in ancient times. But today it is a popular competitive sport. In the 1840s, archery went from being a mere recreational activity to the level of a modern sport.
At the 1900 Paris Olympics, archery was approved as a Summer Olympic sport. The only discipline of this sport that is featured in the Olympic Games is recurve archery, a type of target archery. Archery is also an event of the Summer Paralympics. Jamaica is yet to have a competitive Archer in any Competition
