Manchester City’s Philip Foden won the men’s version of the award
The Football Writers’ Association has recognized Khadija Shaw’s incredible season by awarding her with the Women’s Footballer of the Year award. She won the award after securing nearly 80 percent of the votes together with Chelsea’s Lauren James.
James was identified as the runner-up while the third position went to Man City’s Alex Greenwood. The top six also included Yui Hasegawa, Elisabeth Terland and Khiara Keating respectively.
This is the first time that a Man City player has clinched the award in the last 5 years. In 2019, Nikita Parris won the award after recording 21 goals and three assists. Her performances almost helped her team to win the Women’s Super League.
Shaw’s team is currently sitting on top of the WSL league table. They are six points ahead of their closest rivals Chelsea although the Londoners have a game in hand. Man City last won the league title in 2016 and this is their best chance to win again.
Shaw’s goal-scoring ability has propelled her team to the top of the league. Her goals have helped her team win many crucial games that could have ended as draws or losses. She has emerged as one the leaders in the squad.
The Jamaican striker has improved tremendously since she completed her move from French side Bordeaux. By mid-March, the Jamaican sensation had amassed 31 goals across all competitions during the 2022/23 season, eclipsing Nikita Parris’ previous record for the highest number of goals scored in a single season.
In the current season, she has recorded 21 goals and 3 assists in the league. She has scored a total of 24 goals in competitions.
The Jamaican boasts of being Manchester City’s all-time goal scorer with 72 goals in 84 appearances. She overtook Georgia Stanway who has tally of 67 goals.
However, the Jamaican’s season came to an end after she picked up a foot injury in WSL match against WestHam. She will not participate in the final three games.
Shaw expressed gratitude to the people who voted for her to win the award. She urged her teammates to win the league so that the fans can have a special reason to celebrate.
She thanked her teammates for feeding her with quality opportunities to score. She emphasized that she is nothing without her teammates. She also thanked coach Gareth Taylor and the rest of his team.
