The Jamaican Football Federation couldn’t call up players from international leagues because the friendlies fall outside the mandated FIFA window.
In 2023, the two nations were involved in two similar friendly games with Jamaica being the hosts. Trinidad won the first game with a 1-0 score-line. The second game ended as a 0-0 draw.
The two nations met in 2023 for a competitive match. the game was in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup. The Boyz secured a 4-1 win over Trinidad in the group stages of the competition.
Heimir Hallgrimsson; the head coach of the Jamaican national team, oversaw several training camps that featured local players. Hallgrimsson selected sides that won several friendlies against Jamaica Premier League teams.
Hallgrimsson’s local-based Boyz won against Montego Bay United, Humble Lion and Vere United during the training camps.
Hallgrimsson told journalists that he was using the practice games to discover potential first-team starters in a match setting. He was assessing the potential star players together with his coaching staff. Hallgrimsson was speaking after his team won their game against Montego Bay United.
Hallgrimsson said that watching players in action allows him to lookout for mistakes that might have been missed in training. He then works on correcting the mistakes together with his team. A match will allow the coaches to see if their training drills are working in an in-game situation.
The rival teams will have their first clash at the Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella. The second game is expected to take place at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima. Fans can watch both games at 3 p.m. Jamaica time.
The Boyz’s next assignment will be on March 21 when they face USA in the Concacaf Nations League.
