Mason Greenwood is still interested in playing for the Jamaican national team. This news comes as the Reggae Boyz prepare to embark on their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying journey in less than sixty days.
Michael Ricketts, the President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), reveals ongoing efforts to enlist Greenwood. The 22-year-old striker will be a formidable addition to the Boyz squad. Greenwood has played for England in one international game. He participating as a substitute in their victorious 1-0 match against Iceland during the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League A competition. However, he is still eligible to play for the Reggae Boyz because he has Jamaican heritage.
The Manchester United player is currently enjoying a loan spell at LaLiga club Getafe. Greenwood found himself in a sticky situation after both Manchester United and England distanced themselves from him. In 2023, he was arrested and faced charges of domestic violence against his spouse. He was also accused of attempted rape and engaging in coercive behavior. Additionally, he was accused of threatening to kill his spouse.
In February 2023, Wales and England’s Crown Prosecution Services dismissed all charges. They attributed the decision to the withdrawal of crucial witnesses and the emergence of “new evidence.”
Manchester United decided to suspend Greenwood after received pressure from sponsors and their women’s team. They decided to send him on a season-long loan to Getafe after conducting an internal investigation.
According to some sources, Greenwood has failed to attend at least two scheduled appointments for obtaining a Jamaican passport. It is believed that his father, Andrew, is pressuring him to wait a little longer. Apparently, Andrew still believes that his son can play for England in the future.
According to Ricketts, the striker is still interested in wearing the Jamaican colors. He revealed that that the JFF is working on completing some logistical issues before they can announce the acquisition of Greenwood. He remains optimistic that he can deliver Greenwood to Reggae Boyz coach Heimir Hallgrimsson.
Greenwood has six goals and 5 assists for Getafe in the current season. He has a total of 25 appearances.
Jamaica’s World Cup qualifiers are expected to begin on June 6 when they face the Dominican Republic. The game is expected to happen at the National Stadium.
