Usain Bolt recently said that he turned down a lucrative offer to return to track and field. The Jamaican sprint legend said that he was tempted by the offer and he even considered making a comeback.
He told journalists that the offer was made in 2017, two years after he retired. The offer was presented to him by then-CEO of Puma, Björn Gulden.
Bolt made this revelation when speaking to English media house talkSPORT. He was speaking just before he played in the Soccer Aid charity game.
The Jamaican legend was the captain of the World XI team when they took on the England team. This was his sixth SoccerAid match. The match was played inside Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge stadium.
Bolt said that he was excited to showcase his football skills. He also said that he is happy to participate in a match that will raise a money for children’s programs. Although he clearly loves football, he will always be remembered as a track and field legend. It therefore wasn’t surprising that the journalists were more interested about his sprinting career.
The eight-time Olympic gold medalist said that he wanted to make the comeback but he was stopped by his coach. He said that his coach wasn’t interested in a temporary comeback. He wanted him to remain committed to the sport if he wanted to return.
He said that he dearly missed track and field competitions but his coach refused to coach him.
Bolt claimed that he still feels that he is young enough to compete at the highest level. In fact, he believes that he can beat some of the active athletes. He also claimed that he hasn’t anybody that is good enough to break his 100m record. He believes that this record is special and it will stand the test of time.
Bolt has every right to be confident because he still remains the fastest man to ever live. However, he was full of praise for American sprinter Noah Lyles. He described him as a talented athlete who is improving day by day.
