The Cricket World T20 2016 Champion ‘West Indies’

What a great sports nation! Guess which one? The West Indies, a region of the Caribbean Basin and North Atlantic Ocean that includes the many island nations. The both men and women’s team of West Indies just won the Cricket World T20 2016 title today, on April 3rd, 2016 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. A day to be reminded over and over again.
The Cricket World T20 started on March 8th, 2016. And this is not the first time for the West Indies men’s cricket team. They won their first title in 2012 by defeating Sri Lanka. This time they have blown away the English cricket team. Only this is the first time for the West Indies women’s team. They defeated the dominating 3 times World Champion Australia today and clinched their first World Champion title. t20-world-cup-cricket
It was needed 19 off 6 deliveries. The bowler was English all-rounder in form Ben Stokes. A very difficult task. It had been very difficult for the squad for Chris Gayle (from Jamaica) got out scoring just 4 off 2 balls. Everybody hoped to enjoy his smashing boundaries. The semi-final hero against India, Lendl Simmons (from Trinidad and Tobago) also scored 0. It seemed England was going to clinch their 2nd title. This time, the 2012 hero Marlon Samuels (from Jamaica) stood up once again for his nation. He was on the field with the youngster Carlos Brathwaite (from Barbados), who was on strike at that moment. Everyone was thinking of a single run to get Samuels on the strike. English fans were cheering out; and why not? It was needed 19 from just 6 balls. Only 6 perfect balls could do that for the English squad. Who knew what Brathwaite was thinking at that time? Ben Stokes started running. Million eyes, on the television set. You know what? A new story has just been written. Brathwaite hadn’t only hammered one 6, he hammered 6/6/6/6, 4 consecutive sixes, come on man!

Ben Stokes had nothing to do but watch. Samuels ripped off his shirt in joy, the whole team gathered in a moment to celebrate their victory.

Marlon Samuels was the man of the match for his brilliant knock of 85 off 66 balls, in the way to clinch the 2nd T20 World Champion title for West Indies. On the other hand, Brathwaite scored 34 off 10 balls. He also took 3 English wickets for 23 runs earlier. Batted first, England scored 155/7 from 20 overs. Inform Joe Root scored 54 off 36 balls and Jos Buttler scored 35 off 22 balls. West Indies reached their target with 2 balls remaining and scored 161/6. Dwayne Bravo’s (from Santa Cruz) Champion song and dance couldn’t be blocked off for a bit.

Not only the men’s team, amazingly the West Indies women’s team also clinched their first T20 World Champion title. They defeated 3 times champion Australian women’s team today. Half-centuries from captain Lanning and Elyse Villani powered the Australian to 148/5. It looked they were going to clinch their 4th consecutive title. But the West Indies women’s team was in great form like the men’s team. Skipper Stafanie Taylor and 18-year-old Hayley Matthews, who hammered three sixes in her player of the match knock of 66 off 45 balls, did the job at Eden Gardens. They hit their mark by scoring 149/2 with 3 balls remaining.

Not just the title of men and women Cricket World T20 2016, but also the title of Under19 World Cup also went to the West Indies cricket. What a year for West Indies cricket. Three world championships in one year. We can still hear the celebration of the Caribbean cricket fans. Are you?
