The 32-year-old Johnson produced the moment of magic in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Charlton were the guests in Southampton’s St Mary’s stadium. Johnson’s team is on top of the table alongside Sunderland. On the other hand, the Saints were forced to settle for fourth, three points off the leaders.
The first half finished goalless despite both teams pushing for an early goal. Both teams knew that a victory was enough to propel them to the top of the league.
It was only in the second half that Charlton took the lead two minutes after the resumption. The goal came when the dangerous Kayleigh Green scored a headed goal that eluded all her markers. The goal was created by Carla Humphrey who delivered a delicious cross into the box.
Southampton pressed for the equalizer and Charlton were forced to weather the storm. Charlton regained their dominance when Johnson was introduced as a substitute in the 69th-minute. She ensured that her team grabbed all three points with the stoppage time goal that killed Southampton’s resolve.
Johnson produced a superb solo run from the middle of the pitch, with seven minutes added at the end. She capped off her amazing run by clinically beating goalkeeper Kayla Rendell.
Charlton are now unbeaten in their last seven games. The victory was the team’s fourth on the bounce.
