The Jamaican Scorpions’ game against Leeward Islands kicked off today at 1pm Jamaican time. This is a Super50 Cup league match which is a day/night encounter going down at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda.
Nikita Miller, the Jamaican Scorpions’ assistant coach, revealed that since the team arrived in Antigua, they have had 3 net sessions in which they have practiced well and were ready to meet the Hurricanes.
The 2 teams last met in February 2021 whereby the Scorpions won with a slight six-run win using the Duckworth-Lewis technique. The Hurricanes have so far won a match in 2022’s competition. They thrashed West Indies Academy with 3 wickets.
Miller explained that the Scorpions were not nervous about the Hurricanes already tasting victory and they would be giving their all when they play against them.
They Scorpions’ captain will be Rovman Powell. The team was expected to heavily bank on players like Chadwick Walton, Andre McCarthy, Brandon King and Odean Smith. Sheldon Cottrell who is a fast bowler is yet to join the team and therefore wasn’t available during the opening fixture.
Miller said that the final eleven-squad team would be decided before kick-off. He however revealed that he anticipated a predominating slow side whereby spinners Dennis Bulli, Jeavor Royal and Peat Salmon come in handy.
On the other hand, the Leeward Hurricanes greatly depended on experienced Keacy Carty who netted 103 points against the Academy team. They also had the likes of Devon Thomas and Kieran Powell in their frontline and were captained by Jeremiah Louis and spinner Rahkeem Cornwall.
